Aztlan Island is first and foremost a place for SDSU students to imagine, create, collaborate and experience 3D world building in Second Life®, the online virtual world. It is also SDSU's virtual world presence and provides SDSU students, faculty and staff an introduction to the next generation of the social web: avatar-based 3D environments. What is Second Life®, exactly?

Educational Goals
  • Engage students in high-impact educational experiences (e.g. informal learning and active and collaborative learning which are often found in capstone and special study projects)
  • Develop students' 21st century competencies (e.g. digital literacies, inventive thinking, effective communication and high productivity)

Island Theme and Design
Aztlán (Spanish pronunciation: [asˈtlan], from Nahuatl: Aztlān//, pronounced [ˈastɬaːn]) is the legendary ancestral home of the Nahua peoples, one of the main cultural groups in Mesoamerica. "Aztec" is the Nahuatl word for "people from Aztlan." The image, Chicomoztoc, means the place of the seven caves. Aztec/Aztlán heritage represent the diversity of our regional histories. The island design combines realism in the form of familiar SDSU architectural landmarks and local terrain with the creative idealism for which Second Life® is famous.

Examples of the Types of Projects and Activities the Island Could Support
With a few island guidelines, students can let their imaginations soar. The island supports all SDSU related world-building activities. Here are some of ways people get creative in Second Life®. Here are hot destinations in SL from art to sports to technology.
