Prototyping Learning With Second Life

Context: After presenting the initiative and doing basic demonstrations of the SL for the class, two students, Monica Gibe and Kate Joworski, contacted me about trying it out for their capstone project-a scaled model of an exhibit for the University Art Gallery. The capstone project is typically done as a mat-board model, and Moni and Kate are interior design majors. During our first meeting we realized that some upfront work needed to be done. Some of it was technical, and some conceptual and instructional.

The technical work involved answering these questions:
  • How do we bring an image of a floor plan into Second Life? How do we deal with scale? What is the scale in SL? How do students build the model, (i.e., work with prims, textures and other building elements). How many prims will they need?
The conceptual and instructional work involved answering these questions:
  • What technical skills and knowledge do and don't students need to develop to achieve the course outcomes? Which can be offloaded to the instructional designer and scaffolding into the process?
  • To what extend might the project learning outcomes be reformulated to account for the affordances of the SL platform for this modeling task?
  • In what ways does working with this platform (and related software) influence students' relationship to discipline-related content?
  • To what extent does the platform enhance learning to design exhibits for the real world? Does not? (e.g. help--they're able to actually walk through the model)

The Learning Outcomes for this final project model - "A theoretical exhibition will be conceived, curated and designed; a model will be constructed to represent the exhibition. The concept of the exhibition will be based on artwork from at least two artists. Art works in the exhibition will be illustrated. Scaled representations of the works will be presented based on the dimensions of the University Art Gallery and designed specifically for their installation. The art works must include three-dimensional objects (requiring the use of pedestals, cases or platforms). The design of the model should include consideration of traffic flow, visual accessibility of objects, wall color, organization of objects and wall graphics."
